Creator William Anderson: His journey into Indie Comics and “Karmic Agenda”
There are so many talented and creative minds working on indie comics in 2022. Thanks to the comic book movie phenomena, there’s a new focus on the genre. And thanks to the success of “The Boys,” “Invincible,” and even “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” even the non-collector knows about the wide world of indie comics outside of the Marvel and DC duopoly.
While we were at Awesome Con in June of 2022, we spoke with artist and creator William Anderson about his artwork, his comic series called “Karmic Agenda,” and how he’s faring in the world of indie comics in general. Anderson is a professional graphic artist and designer making his presence felt on the indie comics scene with “Karmic Agenda.”
INDIE COMICS ZONE:
Thanks for your time, William! It’s great to meet you. Can you tell us all a little about your series, “Karmic Agenda?”
WILLIAM ANDERSON:
Yeah! The book is about a young man who, on his wedding day, his whole family village was massacred. He becomes a bounty hunter to search for the person who’s done it. While dealing with the pain of losing loved ones, he comes across a band of mercenaries looking to blow off some steam, and they are his target. It’s a six-issue / seven-issue story up to issue four.
INDIE COMICS ZONE:
So, is this your first indie comic book project?
WILLIAM ANDERSON:
Yeah — well, I’ve done other stuff. This is the first comic book project of my own that I’ve published. I’ve done projects in the past and never saw the light of day. So, this is my first one out the gate and is actually a prequel to something I was working on, but I wanted to do something smaller, not so big, or, you know, would be out of my control. A smaller project.
INDIE COMICS ZONE:
What has been the most challenging part about this whole… all of it?
WILLIAM ANDERSON:
Staying consistent. I am married, have a six-year-old daughter, and have a day job. So, you know, those are my prime things to deal with.
But with this project, between issues three and four, unfortunately, there was a four-year break because of job, pandemic, and daughter. So that was a thing. And then I got distracted by other things, other projects other in another form, which totally made me rethink my whole process.
I got into Audible books like fantasy books, which influenced my series that I wanted to do more world-building and more creatures. So it’s like, I had to sit there and rethink the whole process.
And you know, that was like a major ‘Oh my God, I want to do this.’ I want to do that. The biggest thing is staying focused, on target, and on track.
INDIE COMICS ZONE:
I saw that “Karmic Agenda” is available on Amazon in digital format. But who do you use to print the physical book?
WILLIAM ANDERSON:
Comic Wellspring. I’ve been using them since 2011. At my first comic-con, I did sketchbooks through them, and I’ve been with them ever since.
INDIE COMICS ZONE:
How does your daughter react to your comics and artwork?
WILLIAM ANDERSON:
Oh, she loves it. She was always jumping in when I’m drawing. I’ll be drawing on my tablet or my Wacom, and she’ll jump in and start doing her thing. I make sure I save everything and put another layer or put a piece of paper over it and let her go at it. If I’m drawing, I have to stop and do a drawing for her. And then I get back from my work. [laughs]
