Writer Scott Cox talks about his indie comic book “The Chronicles of War”
We caught up with Scott Cox at the Awesome Con in June 2022, which took place in Washington, D.C. Cox had a table in Artist’s Alley. Like most other indie comics creators who were in attendance, he was ready to share the details about his journey. See our interviews with Greg Burnham and William Anderson, which we also conducted at Awesome Con.
His book, “The Chronicles of War,” is printed in black and white and features art by Tirso Llaneta. It’s also available to purchase as a download for Amazon Kindle.
Cox has a degree in screenwriting but currently works for the government. He told us that producing “The Chronicles of War” was his way of getting closer to what he went to college for back in the day. We asked Cox to talk about “The Chronicles of War” and how he produced it.
SCOTT COX:
“Chronicles of War” is about the future, when the new United Empire takes over the world, and human beings live within eight utopias. The fall of the last free city, San Antonio, and any humans living within the free city are captured and sent to the mines.
And pretty much, the story begins when a scavenger finds a safe and young boy and starts protecting him. They find out that within the safe is the history of how the world became the way it was.
I would compare this to “Blade Runner” and “The Matrix” meets “The Never-Ending Story.” You go between the future and then come back to basically the present day. It’s a graphic novel with about 170 pages with about nine or ten total volumes in the series.
INDIE COMICS ZONE:
So this is your first book?
SCOTT COX:
Yes.
INDIE COMICS ZONE:
Awesome. So, what was the most challenging part of this process for you? There seem to be a bunch of ways to create your own indie comic book.
SCOTT COX:
I’ve been working on the series for about ten years, and the hardest part was probably deciding to basically take on all the risks. Because I have a degree in Professional Screenwriting, and trying to put it out there to get my story out to people. I’d say that was probably the most challenging part.
INDIE COMICS ZONE:
What do you do in real life?
SCOTT COX:
I work for the government.
INDIE COMICS ZONE:
As a screenwriter?
SCOTT COX:
No. This is getting back into what you want to do. We all have something that we want to do. Something else pays the bills, right? Unless you’re lucky enough to actually have that job.
The hardest part is getting it out there. Getting people to like something new, rather than something like, you know, Spider-Man or Superman, has been around forever.
Folks interested in checking out “The Chronicles of War” can visit Cox’s website. There you can sign up for his newsletter or follow him on various social media channels. He’s also produced a series of videos featuring a grumpy old man, called “Honest Abe,” who comments on pop culture, like the trailer for the new “She-Hulk” show on Disney+.
Cox created an additional site dedicated to promoting “The Chronicles of War.” Visit that site here.
